Camino De Santiago
Friends of the Coombe, together with RTÉ's Donncha O'Dulaing are delighted to announce "Camino De Santiago" fundraising walk.
From September 7th to 14th Donncha O' Dulaing will be leading us on this very popular trail. It is an excellent opportunity to enjoy beautiful countryside and most importantly raise much needed funds for the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital.
It is important to note that this is not a competitive or physically taxing walk. Participants will walk for as much as is comfortable for themselves. A coach will trail the walkers allowing for rests whenever required.
The pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain owes its origin to the discovery, in what is now Galicia, of the tomb of the Apostle James the Great sometime early in the 9th century. It probably achieved its greatest popularity in the 12th century, when it came to rival Rome and Jerusalem as goals of Christian pilgrimage, and though it declined thereafter, it has never been entirely forgotten. In recent years it has seen a renewed surge of interest, and in 1987 it was declared the first European Cultural Route by the Council of Europe.
